QWhat is computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) and how does it work in market research?
What is computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) and how does it work in market research?
Computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) is a quantitative data collection method where interviewers use a computer-based script to conduct telephone surveys. The system automatically dials numbers, displays questions on screen, and records responses directly into a database, minimizing human error and speeding up data processing. CATI is widely used for political polling, customer satisfaction studies, and healthcare research because it allows for real-time data validation, skip logic, and centralized monitoring of interviewer performance. The process typically involves a trained interviewer reading questions verbatim from the script while the computer manages sample quotas, call scheduling, and response logging. Compared to traditional pen-and-paper telephone surveys, CATI offers higher accuracy, faster turnaround times, and the ability to handle complex branching questions without confusing the interviewer. For research agencies and end clients, CATI remains a cost-effective solution for reaching nationally representative samples, especially in markets where internet penetration is low or where respondents prefer voice interaction over self-administered online surveys.
QWhat are the benefits of outsourcing market research fieldwork to a specialist agency?
What are the benefits of outsourcing market research fieldwork to a specialist agency?
Outsourcing market research fieldwork to a specialist agency provides access to trained interviewers, quality control processes, and established respondent panels that internal teams often lack. Specialist agencies employ rigorous screening and validation procedures to ensure data accuracy and representativeness. They also manage complex logistical tasks such as scheduling, multi-mode data collection (CATI, CAWI, face-to-face), and compliance with data protection regulations. By outsourcing, companies can scale fieldwork up or down without investing in permanent infrastructure or training. Furthermore, specialist agencies bring sector-specific expertise in recruiting hard-to-reach populations, such as healthcare professionals or B2B decision-makers, which improves response rates and data quality. This approach allows research buyers to focus on analysis and strategic insights while reducing overhead costs and project turnaround times. Ultimately, partnering with a fieldwork specialist enhances the reliability of research outcomes and mitigates risks associated with interviewer bias, sample contamination, or non-compliance with ethical guidelines.
QHow do market research agencies recruit participants for qualitative studies?
How do market research agencies recruit participants for qualitative studies?
Market research agencies recruit participants for qualitative studies through a multi-step process that begins with defining the target audience based on demographic, behavioral, or attitudinal criteria. Agencies maintain proprietary databases or panels of pre-screened individuals who have opted in to be contacted for research. Recruitment often uses multiple channels including telephone screening, online invitations, social media targeting, and referrals. For hard-to-reach groups, such as medical specialists or senior executives, agencies apply targeted search strategies like professional association lists and LinkedIn outreach. Each potential participant is screened via a detailed questionnaire to ensure they meet the specific quotas for age, income, usage habits, or other relevant factors. After selection, agencies handle scheduling, incentives management, and confirmation to minimize no-shows. Agencies also enforce strict quality controls, such as verifying identity and avoiding professional respondents, to maintain data integrity. This systematic approach ensures that qualitative research sessions — whether focus groups, in-depth interviews, or online communities — have the right mix of participants to generate actionable insights.

“Focused on -What we do! Feedback are specialists in quality controlled fieldwork and qualitative recruitment. We provide efficient and cost effective solutions to end clients and research agencies alike who require support with Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI), field interviewing (CAWI or pen & paper) or recruitment. Feedback has one of the largest independent field-forces in the UK with over 1000 interviewers who operate nationally through a network of regional supervisors. The business is led by Managing Director, Carolyn Copley who has over 20 years of research experience, including 8 years in a full service agency as a Project Manager across a wide range of sectors. “Our team drive Feedback Market Research to provide our clients with cost effective quality assured market research services.”
“History of Feedback Feedback Market Research was founded in 2000 by Carolyn Copley. From our early beginnings working from a garage on the East Coast, the company has grown from strength to strength, now operating from purpose built offices and boasting an in house Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) suite of 20 stations. We are an independent fieldwork agency that provides competitively priced, quality controlled quantitative fieldwork and qualitative recruitment. We are committed to delivering results on spec, on budget and on time, every time. We have one of the largest independent fieldforces in the UK, with over 1000 interviewers who operate nationally through our network of 20 regional supervisors.”
“Quality Assurance For quality control purposes, 10% of all interviewers’ work is back-checked. In addition, for Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) projects, our call monitoring allows us to check length and number of calls made. All paper questionnaires are edited to check that questions have been correctly answered and CATI projects are monitored real-time to allow immediate identification of problems. All errors are returned to interviewers for recall and correction. Data entry is checked by at least a 20% double entry policy and summary tables are produced. Hole counts are produced to check figures for projects where analysis is not required, when only data entry files are specified. Similarly, tables are closely checked for accuracy and internal consistency. Clients are given regular progress updates and log in details to our CATI platform so they remotely check on progress.”

Top 3 Blockers
- !LLM-crawlable robots.txtMake sure your robots.txt allows crawling of important public pages and blocks only what should not be indexed (admin, internal search, duplicate parameter paths). If you use AI/LLM-specific crawler rules, document them clearly. After changes, test crawling with real bots/tools to confirm nothing critical is accidentally blocked.
- !LLM-crawlable llms.txtCreate an llms.txt file to guide AI crawlers to your most important, high-quality pages (docs, pricing, about, key guides). Keep it short, well-structured, and focused on authoritative URLs you want cited. Treat it as a curated “AI sitemap” that improves discovery and reduces the risk of crawlers prioritizing low-value pages.
- !Is sitemap.xml exists?Maintain a sitemap.xml that includes your important canonical URLs and keeps last-modified dates accurate when content changes. Submit it in Search Console and ensure it is accessible to crawlers. A sitemap improves discovery of deeper pages and helps systems prioritize fresh, updated content.
Top 3 Quick Wins
- !List in public LLM indexes (e.g., Huggingface database, Poe Profiles)List your tools, datasets, docs, or brand pages on major AI/LLM discovery hubs where relevant (for example model/dataset repositories or app directories). These platforms add credibility signals (likes, forks, usage) and create additional crawlable references to your brand. Keep names, descriptions, and links consistent with your official website.
- !Open Graph title or OpenGraph & Twitter meta tags populatedPopulate Open Graph and Twitter Card tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and their Twitter equivalents). These tags control how your pages appear when shared and are often used by crawlers to form quick summaries. Validate with social preview/debug tools to ensure the correct title, description, and image display.
- !Canonical tags are used properlyUse canonical tags to define the preferred version of each page, especially when parameters, filters, or duplicate URLs exist. Canonicals prevent duplicate-content confusion and consolidate ranking signals. Verify canonical URLs return 200 status and point to the correct, indexable page.
